Our Children Today

Our Children Today

‘Kids at play’ is spontaneous theater, each child playing the starring role. They are filled with a joy and wonder that adults can no longer comprehend. Child’s play lacks the strict rules, conventions, and social pressures of the “adult” world. For most, spontaneous, never-staged play within an intimate distance that ranges from 0 to 19 inches is, only for children. As we mature we create inviolable personal spaces, a distance from each other with resistance and hesitation.  Adults surround themselves with “bubble” barricade of personal distance that ranges from 2 to 4 feet.

In my video, two performers mimic children’s actions, expressions, and gestures. The scenes and movements of ‘play’ were choreographed based on my photographs of children at play I had taken for over 10 years. The dance sequence was inspired from contact improvisation, a partner dance based on the communication between two moving bodies that are in physical contact.
